Jonatan is a Belgium based spin artist. This can be slightly misleading though, as he is not only defined by that word, on the contrary.

He has quite a practical mindset which partly originates after obtaining two Masters degrees, one in industrial engineering and one in environmental management. For a big part of his life, art didn’t play a large role.​

As he grew older, he started to explore the most precious thing one possesses: his mind. This he has done mainly by a quote from Frank Tibolt he hung in his room, back when he was still a teenager discovering life:

​“We should be taught not to wait for inspiration to start a thing. Action always generates inspiration. Inspiration seldom generates action.”

This quote is still resonating within him when creating spin art, where taking action is far more valuable than feeling inspired.

Spin art is a technique where a canvass is fixed to a spinner. After pouring paint on this medium and performing specific actions, the canvass is spun. This creates an astonishing pattern of colors, based on a centrifugal motion only partly in control by the creator. As soon as the canvass starts spinning, an element of surprise is introduced, adding a new parameter which you can’t fully control.

Looking for the unexpected, generates a feeling of acceptance. Accepting there are things in life we can’t control, and thus should not worry about.

The technique itself holds this important Stoic concept we ought not to forget: worry not about things you can’t control, and even try to embrace them. They hold magic. The process is the message.
