Biography

Marc (1972), born in the hospital and raised in Katwijk, is self-taught. His passion for art stems from his background as a graffiti artist. From the mid-80s to the early 1990s, Marc was involved in designing graffiti and so-called characters (cartoon figures). What characterizes him during this period is his extensive research into the backgrounds and movements within graffiti. He delves into the history of origins, development and the various styles. However, the development of graffiti in its original form stopped in the mid-1990s. His interest in the Cobra movement arose in the mid-1990s. Cobra is a group of international artists who worked together from 1948 to 1951. The cobra movement mainly turned against any aestheticizing academicism that overemphasized intellectualism. Form, line and color are the representation of a purely spontaneous action in which the artists did not hesitate to fall back on so-called primitive art, children's drawings and what is now called outsider art. In these three artistic expressions they saw a corresponding spontaneity from the naive character, naive in the sense of uneducated, ignorant. What really appeals to Marc are the similarities between the graffiti movement and the Cobra group. Although there is more than 50 years between the two periods of origin, there are many similarities. The spontaneous and fast way of working in both movements appeals to him in particular. Marc: “When I think too much about what I am going to make while painting, things go wrong.” Marc shares the view that art should not be for the elite. Art by people for people. Graffiti was originally sprayed on subways to reach the largest possible audience. The COBRA artists finally surpassed their ideals when their work fetched enormous sums at auctions and in galleries. Graffiti artists only became successful in the art world after they started working on canvas. So it also applies to them that they went beyond their ideals. Marc tries to avoid these kinds of concessions by balancing his artistry with a professional career elsewhere. This makes him financially independent and he can do whatever he wants in terms of art.
