MADELEINE WEIJERMAN (1960) – BIOGRAPHY
Born in Amsterdam, Madeleine Weijerman has been drawing since she could hold a pencil. Her parents encouraged her talent, which led to the fashion academy and the Rietveld Academy. At the age of eighteen, she was the youngest student at the fashion program.
After her studies, she worked for 35 years as a stylist for fashion shows, film, photography and commercials. She illustrated for De Telegraaf and various magazines, designed for fashion house Rue Neuve and founded her own label UNAWATA. The iconic UNAWATA 'Crisis' bag was on display at the COBRA Museum and the Bag Museum. She also taught for many years at the Charles Montage fashion academy.
Her watercolors show her own colorful style. Strong, styled women dominate every canvas, dressed in self-designed creations with accessories such as peacock feathers, flowers and collars. The characteristic eyes with voluptuous eyelashes are her signature.
Symbolism is abundant: butterflies for deceased loved ones, birds for freedom, flowers for connection with nature, hearts for love. The cheerful explosions of color reflect her zest for life.
She often makes commissioned portraits, where a conversation allows for personal touches. Her love for painting is palpable in every work.
