Biography

Born in 1967 in the Pijp in Amsterdam. Marcus followed an LBO course, where the grades for mathematics, with an average of a six, were in stark contrast to manual dexterity and drawing, which often had tens. After his education, he ended up at a printing company through a number of jobs, including in a paint spraying shop, where he took his first real graphic training courses. Graphic professional, offset techniques and graphic technician. Marcus later switched to a small printing company in Amsterdam where he successfully completed the Graphic Management course in 2001. Drawing and creative expression have always been there for Marcus, the urge to create something and be busy with something. In 2008, the drawing pencil was exchanged for a brush and spray cans and the paper for a canvas. It had to be bigger and a bit coarser. Marcus has always had a preference for the “imperfect” or rough in paintings. The goal is not the result but the “making” of a work of art. Inspired by everyday things and people, but sometimes also by old masters, he starts with a busy background after which he places a recognizable image on it. Sometimes there is little left to see of that background, but the artwork grows during the painting. His style is not easy to categorize, free painting is what Marcus is all about. Being free to do and create whatever he feels like at that moment. A real Freepainter.
